In Malawi, primary education is free for everyone, but secondary education is not, which means even in state schools, families have to pay for their education. This is unaffordable to most, so secondary education is not as wide spread as it is in the UK. Moreover, there are an estimated 1.2 million AIDS orphans in Malawi.
The MOSES charity was founded in 2003 out of a concern at the lack of educational opportunities for orphaned young people. These are the most needy of all in the country so the charity was created to financially support the orphans by paying their school fees and contributing to the costs of stationery and books, etc. This provides the orphans with the opportunity to become educated, an opportunity they would not have without the sponsorship money raised in this country.
